Where it all began...

Life in the country is the life we love. Wide open spaces and being close to nature is where we feel the most at home. 

We feel incredibly blessed to call this beautiful part of the country home, but life out here comes with its challenges too. The weather can turn in a heartbeat, and the wind can really howl through these hills. Come rain or shine, there are always jobs to be done, and we know firsthand what it can do to your skin. 

My journey into making skincare started with our own family, when our daughter came down with a bad case of nappy rash. I tried all sorts of products, but nothing was quite doing the job. Like any parent, I just wanted something that worked, and fast. 

Rather than jumping back in the ute to head into town in search of yet another product, I decided to have a go at making something myself. I went back to simple, natural ingredients and started experimenting with making my own balms.

It was the middle of winter at the time, and my husband John was out fencing on-farm in some pretty unforgiving conditions. Fencing is hard on the hands at the best of times. Add freezing mornings, mud, rain, wind and long days working with your hands, and before long those hands become dry, cracked and very sore. 

So I thought, why not make something that works for both? 

Something gentle enough for our little one, but tough enough to look after hands that are doing the hard yards, day in and day out.

After plenty of trial and error, my first hand and body balm came together. It worked so well for us that friends and family started asking for some too.

Word spread faster than we expected, and eventually I decided to take the next step and launch Mother’s.

I landed on the name because where we live, we’re surrounded by people who work very, very hard. Farmers, fencers, arborists, mums, dads, everyday hardworking Kiwis. People who spend their days getting stuck in, caring for their family and friends, animals, the land, and all of the other things they hold dear.

But even the strongest among us need love and care. 

And that is really what Mother’s is about — bringing some extra care into the lives of those who spend so much of their time looking after everything and everyone else.

Every Mother’s product is handcrafted in small batches, using quality 100% natural ingredients. We keep things simple, making products that feel good to use, do what they’re meant to do, and genuinely earn their place in your home. 

These are the products we use for our own family, and we hope they bring a little extra care to your day-to-day too.
